(photo from first day of school, Canterbury House) It is so good to be back with students.
If you can believe it, with the beginnings of classes and lab, with syllabi in one hand and classwork in another, students are already overwhelmed. Not to mention the political climate on campus and beyond, the academic pressures, administrative concerns, and all the other things of life—normal or not.
During our recent campus ministry board retreat, our board vice chair, Andrew, reminded us of the wisdom of Indigenous author and botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer for this historical time: “Even a wounded world is feeding us. Even a wounded world holds us, giving us moments of wonder and joy. I choose joy over despair. Not because I have my head in the sand, but because joy is what the earth gives me daily and I must return the gift.” Kimmerer’s words remind us that the world, even in its current state of deep woundedness, continues to offer us gifts. These gifts do not to distract us from pain, but help to sustain us through it. Participating in joy, in community, and in celebration is not a denial of suffering. It is a practice of reverence and of hope.
This past Sunday, our campus ministry students reflected on the familiar rhythm of Ecclesiastes, which reminds us that this too is a season, with its own complexities, challenges, and gifts. There is room to mourn and to celebrate, to question and to believe, to be stretched and to be held. Perhaps what’s most powerful was the wisdom our students are already living into the capacity to hold both the grief and gratitude, the exhaustion and purpose, together.
This kind of wisdom is not easily taught in a lecture or lab, but it is cultivated in community. It’s a reminder to keep showing up together not just for the work, but for one another, in trust, in witness, and in partnership with God in the long arc of justice. There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build.
Ecclesiastes 3:1–3 |
from a "Liturgy of Lamentation and Jubilee for Creation" (created by students)
As we wrapped up our program year, students submitted works of art, poetry, and liturgy from the pilgrimage hikes, vocation retreats, and Sunday Dinner Church in the Liturgy of Lamentation and Jubilee for Creation.
Uniquely young adult, uniquely rooted in the Pacific Northwest, this book offers one ever-changing community of faith’s reflection of learning stories. It marks the beginning of a renewed Christian practice to discern the next steps in our work to care for Creation and steward our unique gifts, energy, and resources towards healing and wholeness with the earth.
