In just a few short weeks, students will return to campus fresh from summer internships, travel, and time home with family and friends. Thanks to you, Luther House will be ready to welcome them home at OSU. This fall, we're welcoming returning students back with open arms, and plants for dorm rooms and new apartments. We're planning menus and celebrations for the joy and newness in the gift of the beginnings of new students and returning students. There is gift of in each cycle of seasons and life. In the rhythm of each year, and particularly the fall, I am remembering how much can change and grow with the gift of time and patience. A year ago, I was preparing to have a baby. This baby is now on the move, exploring all that she can possibly reach. She is close to walking, close to taking her first steps with a newfound autonomy and self-determination. I find myself in the words of Meta Herrick Carlson's blessing, "For First Steps," in this season, not only for my child, but for all the not-so-young people taking their first steps campus life. May you find this blessing steadying you in the failures and freedoms at stake in your own life: Something happens when we let go of the only bearings
we've even known and
a new thing takes charge. Every milestone is death and resurrection, a tiny transformation in which something old passes away and new life sneaks in. These feet are brace to explore
a vertical view of what's ahead, the failures and freedom at stake every time they release their grip to take another step and try.

"What does this (Lutheran Campus Ministry @ OSU) mean?" by Siena Buchanan |
"What does this mean?" is a new part of our monthly newsletter, where we ask our students to share the impact Luther House has on their lives. |
Luther House is one of the few places of worship in which I truly feel safe as an LGBTQ+ individual. Growing up in a church that was particularly strict on those kinds of things, it is often hard for me to feel safe in religious environments. Luther House feels like a form of a home away from home, a place to study, hang out, and just exist in a space that is welcoming and safe. Attending Sunday night dinners has become one of the highlights of my week, to be able to have good food and even better conversation with my peers, and meet people I never imagined I would be meeting.
